Albatross (Wheeler Large Print Book)
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (June, 1994)
Authors: Deborah Scaling Kiley and Meg Noonan
Average review score:

You're there!
I've read quite a few "stories of survival" and I have to say this one puts you "in the life raft" better than any I've read. Very vivid descriptions of both mental state of mind and physical discomforts. This will probably leave you with some vivid mental pictures long after you're finished with the book.

It's like "Into Thin Air", but in the Ocean.
Imagine sailing a 70-foot yacht in an 80-knot hurricane wind in for 58 hours. Now, imagine the boat falling off a wave and sinking beneath your feet... An agonizing survival story that will teach you new respect for the elements. Read it in a safe place.

Every page is a cliff-hangar; a sailing trip gone bad.
For sailors or people who love adventure, this book permits one to understand the snowball effect of chaos on-board a sailboat and what it takes to survive in the Atlantic Ocean.

I'm Only One Man! (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Cloth))

Regis 6/15/94-5/19/95 and Some of his yesterdays
Regis's book logs many of the days(incl some holidays) between 6/15/94-5/19/95 with some of the yesterdays prior to 6/14/94 .....Good intro by the Regis and Cathy Live staff at that time( Michael Gelman and Cathy Lee Gifford) Gelman still Gelman and Cathy Lee ,has moved on for even better someday.. ,plus there is much levity through out( It was given as a gift to me for Xmas 2000,I've skimmed through the entire book and got a few chuckles without even getting to much into the NY ,NY details(photos were great,& joke about Perry Como quite funny). It ends with smoothness and ease:as Regis, in his biography says to the reader" I've got to find my plane tickets, back my bags and get ready for the next show. After all,I'm only one man". 12/27/00 abj

Funny and enlightening
Reading this book is like sitting down with Regis and listening to him tell you stories. You will be able to look deeper into the man that engages in Host Chat with Kathie Lee everyday. This book is an example of how far Regis really came in life and how hard he had to work for it. This can almost be a self-help book in a way because it portrays the commitment to excellence put forth by Regis to achieve his dream....and did he ever!

A great, fun read!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I learned things about Regis that you won't learn by watching him on TV. I enjoyed reading about his trials and tribulations of his career, from his early days to the present. I have recommended this books to others. Whoever has my copy, please return it! This is one book you can read again.

Me and Johnny Blue (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (June, 2001)
Author: Joseph A. West
Average review score:

A Remarkable New Voice
Me And Johnny Blue is a remarkable novel, made even moreso for being the first novel from a new writer. Fast-paced, nimbly-plotted and packed with deft, comic characterizations, it is a rollicking good ride with the genre's requisite danger, excitement, and gun-blazing action -- along with a healthy dose of laugh-out-loud good humor. Me And Johnny Blue chronicles the adventures of two of the genre's most hard-luck heroes: a young, white cowpuncher and his African-American blood-brother Johnny Blue, during the waning days of The Old West as they set out on a roundabout quest to find Johnny's little sister. Along the way, they encounter a unusual cast of oddballs, unlikely heroes, and colorful villians, and manage to become unwittingly embroiled in a plot to start a second American Civil War. West's skill at characterization and creating comic situations help this book rise above the usual offerings of the western genre, but he's equally adept at evoking a convincing aura of historical authenticity. Ultimately, however, it is the distinctive voice of its anonymous narrator that truly makes Me And Johnny Blue stand out. It is distinct, fresh, funny, and full of promise, leading the reader eager for further adventures of the motley pair.

Read this book!
This is by far one of the best western novels I've ever read. From the very first page you know you are about to embark on one hell of an adventure with the scrawny, red-mustachioed narrator and his wisecracking black blood brother Johnny Blue.

A pair of displaced cowboys, Me and Johnny Blue set to roaming the wild-west in search of "their" long lost Little Sister. Along the way, they meet up with a somewhat crooked, although kind spirited doctor, soiled doves, heartless outlaws and some sarcastic Indians.

After suffering through more calamities then the Three Stooges in a fine arts museum, Me and Johnny Blue manage to preserve peace in our United States, and get a lot of laughs, and even a tear or two, along the way.

This is a superbly crafted, fast moving, laugh-out-loud piece of American literature, I highly recommend it not only to western fans, but everyone in search of an action packed read.

Outstanding!
If you have gotten the idea that this is a 350-page frolic of tall tales, then be assured that it's much more than that. This first-person account tells of the last days of the open range cowboy, the great blizzard of '87, racial hatred, and a diabolical plot to start a second Civil War. That's not a spoiler, as you find it all out on the first page! A page-turner deluxe, with great insight, humor and ultra-smmoth writing. Plus, there's a nice loose end that could (I hope!) lead to a sequel. Absolutely A++.

A Morning Like This (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Cloth))
Published in Hardcover by Wheeler Pub (December, 2002)
Author: Deborah Bedford
Average review score:

A Morning Like This
David and Abby Treasure are a happily-married couple in their mid thirties. Their family life is picture perfect. He has a stable job in banking and teaches Sunday school. She is a counsellor at a battered women's shelter and is a little league mom. Their 10 year-old son is healthy, popular and well-behaved. However, all stability evaporates when a long-hidden infidelity comes to light. This affair has a ripple effect which extends over the entire community.

This novel takes a close look at how a breach of trust can threaten and destroy a family. The novel focuses on the emotional impact -- the defensiveness and blame-shifting of the adulterer, the crushed self-esteem and irrational anger of the betrayed spouse, the panic of the children whose worlds are ripped apart at the seams, and the mutual resentment of all parties concerned. As author Deborah Bedford points out in her afterword, the story was inspired by actual events.

The writing is dramatic and fast-paced. The characters are at once both plausible and surprising. All the characters are sympathetically portrayed. This helps the reader to think about the hot button topic of marital infidelity from several angles. As a bonus, the author includes a bibliography of readings for couples in crisis. This book is an insightful work on recovery and forgiveness from a Christian perspective.

A Morning Like This
I loved this book. We recently moved to Jackson which makes it even better. ha.. There are things that I am currently going through which are unrelated to the story plot but I recieved a message from it.

This is a story of an affair that was covered over for years and suddenly surfaces with a child in need. David Treasures has to deal with his own personal Christian walk and his attempt to keep his affair a secret or lose everything. This book deals with true emotions and touched on other issues you might have in your everyday Christian walk. You watch as Abigail struggles with her own issues of betrayal and forgiveness. I encourage you to read this book and get lost in Deborah's wonderful way with words. PS: You might need a tissue.. I did.. : )

Following God isn't about obeying rules, it's about passion
This author is fast becoming one of my favorites. She does not gloss over the pain and betrayal of finding out that your husband has had an affair. In fact, she takes the care to linger on all of those feelings and make sure that they ring true. My husband and I went through a struggle like this six years ago and, when I began the story, I thought it would not equal what happens in real life. But I was wrong. Bedford writes of a wife who feels betrayed and alone and unloved. She writes of a woman who is willing to set an ultimatum and then love her husband even though she looks at him across the room and sees somebody she doesn't know. At the back of the book, there is a list of recommended reading for people struggling. This story is set in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It is fast paced, with even a scene of the husband climbing the Grand Teton, coming down in a storm. This book is good entertainment. It will also take you on a deep spiritual search. Is God someone who really wants to have a relationship with us? Can we do that, even when all our relationships around us fail?I believe so. I lived this story, and my marriage is stronger now than some of my friends who have good marriages. Look for other books by Deborah Bedford, including A Rose By The Door and The Story Jar. She doesn't pull any punches and she doesn't back away from tough, interesting issues.

No Time for Goodbyes: Coping with Sorrow, Anger, and Injustice After a Tragic Death
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Publishing of California (September, 1987)
Authors: Janice Harris Lord, Patricia Pederson, and Eugene D. Wheeler
Average review score:

Good but not exceptional
I thought this book was informative but could have offered a lot more in-depth information. It is good for someone looking for some very basic ideas.

no time for goodbyes
After my father was killed in an industrial accident I went to the bookstore seaching for books on death and grieving. I found no comfort and in fact found myself angered when reading story after story about people who lost their loved ones to a long illness. It broke my heart to read about how they got to tell them that they loved them, something I never got. "No Time For Goodbyes" was the only book that dealt with the shock and reality of telling someone, "have a good day at work," and never seeing them again.

Highly recommended for anyone victim of tragic death
This book came recommended to me by Parents of Murdered Children. It was comforting to read after the murder of my 20-year-old son. The book covers a lot of ground and I've recommended it to several people who have been victim to a tragic death at any age, children to adult. Affordable, it should be placed in the hands of all those struggling after a violent death. It leads one through the stages of suffering and grief, and lets one know that it is okay to have these feelings, and that one can go on.

Pasta & Pizza Presto: Over 100 of the Best, Authentic Italian Favourites Made Simple
Published in Hardcover by Lorenz Books (October, 1996)
Authors: Maxine Clark, Shirley Gill, Sue Maggs, Annie Nichols, and Steven Wheeler
Average review score:

Excellent Italian for Beginners!
I found this book to have clear and cohesive explanations. As I thumbed through it I found several wonderful meat, seafood, and vegetarian recipies that anyone with any level of cooking experience could prepare. I'm a beginner at Italian cooking and my co-workers, friends, and family simply rave about the wonderful dishes that I serve at outings, dinners, and potlucks. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with little time and a desire to learn to cook.

tasty and easy recipes
I've used recipes from this book for several years. It contains one of my all-time favorite dishes: pasta with a creamy avacado sauce. It also has great recipes for pizza dough.

Pasta & Pizza Presto : Step-By-Step
I lived in Italy for 2 years and I found the recipes very authentic. Excellent recipes with excellent cooking techniques and great pictures of food and cooking equipment. I borrowed my girlfriend's copy and have made almost everything in the book. I'm waiting to buy my copy! I love it!

The Voice of Hope
Published in Audio Cassette by Shambhala Audio (January, 1999)
Authors: Aung San Suu Kyi, Alan Clements, and Kate Wheeler
Average review score:

Boring and repetitive
I have always been fascinated by Burma in all its aspects and I wanted to be more informed on the current political and social situations. The subject is certainly very interesting but I personally found the book itself very boring and repetitive: The concepts and ideas are repeated dozens of times in different chapters, over and over again. This book would have been much more powerful and appealing with 100 pages instead of 300.

Wonderful writings from Burma's living hope
In this book, as in "Freedom from Fear" and "Letters from Burma", Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi exposes to the world the grim realities of her land and her people, seen through her very eyes. As always, she is able to jump with great ability from more personal and sentimental accounts of the situation, to hard data, from recollections of her childhood, to perspectives on Burma's future. Always filled with thrill and dense with emotions, her writings are for the expert and the ignorant alike, easy to understand, yet of high value historically and academically. For anyone wishing to know more about Burma and the struggle of her people for human rights, this is must reading.

unbelievably powerful, inspirational, a true gift
This book shocked me awake to the realities of countries where freedom is not enjoyed as in the United Sates. The government's repression and horrific inhumantiy are just unbelievable. But, more amazing is the dedication to nonviolence which Aung San Suu Kyi and her party follow in their democracy movement. Her manner in speaking of Burma's serious situation is so calm, hopeful, and loving that it makes one reinterpret and recast their interactions with their own worlds. One may also reflect on one's place in humanity and see that Burma's tragedy, Burma's fate, is our own and we must act now. Aung San's hope and strength are qualities we would do well to adopt as our own. I do not think it is possible for one to read this book and NOT feel urged to take some form of real action (via letter writing, publicizing the issue, etc).

4 Wheeler's Guide to the Rubicon Trail
Published in Spiral-bound by Deer Valley Press (20 January, 1998)
Author: William C. Teie
Average review score:

somewhat helpful book
The intention to provide information about the Rubicon Trail deserves applause - the result however is disappointing: The book provides very little helpful information. Despite many maps and pictures the book does not help a novice to navigate the trail.

Kern L. Napoletano, Webmaster - 4-Wheel Drive/SUVs
This is the best book aout the Rubicon I have very read. It's well done! If you've never been on the trail this is th enext best thing. If you have been down the trail get this book anyway. You'll love it.

Great book for those who have or plan to travel the Rubicon.
The Rubicon is the grand-daddy of all 4x4 trails. This book does a great job of telling about this famous 4-wheel drive trail. Mr. Teie will tell you how to get ready and what to take. He goes into the history of the trail which might surprise some of you. It is a very old trail that has been in use since mankind has been in California. The book does an excellent job telling you all the ways into the trail and all the parts of the trail. It gives the miles from point to point along with great maps. It even has maps from days long gone. What you should take with you and (as a true 4-wheeler should) the book talks about trail etiquette and safety are some of the other topics in this book. This book also lets you know what the Forest Service rules and regulations are of area, which can be very useful. This is a special book of the Rubicon Trail. It has great pictures of the trail also. One thing about pictures of 4-wheeling is the fact they just don't do justice to the trail. Mr. Teie found a way around this. He has put some 3D pictures in along with the regular pictures. Don't worry, the book comes with 3D glasses also. I recommend this book, 4 Wheeler's Guide to the Rubicon Trail, to anyone and everyone who plans to go to the Rubicon or has been doing the trail for years. This is a great book for all.

Antarctica the Falklands and South Georgia (Cadogan Guides)
Published in Paperback by Cadogan Guides (April, 1997)
Author: Sara Wheeler
Average review score:

Good book overall
I really enjoyed this book. I bought it to learn about Antarctica, and initially, I was a little disappointed with the seemingly superfluous information such as which cruises are available, etc. But there is some really interesting information in this book that seems trivial but is really fascinating, such as what people on Antarctica eat or what they do to keep themselves occupied. I really enjoyed this book and I finished it thinking I had just acquired a wealth of knowledge about the mysterious continent.

First class book, filled with good facts and easy to read.
This book is a must read for anyone who plans to travel south of Argentina. The book has brief but satisfying histories of the area, discriptions of what difficulties and enjoyments polar regions offer visitors and masses of what to do and how to do it. It is a splendid little manual for all who hanker after an exotic, safe and pleasant trip to Antarctica, the Falklands and South Georgia..

A good basic guide to Antarctic travel and resources
This book basically covers it all- wildlife, history, how to get there, what there is once you get there. It is portable and readable, with all the most basic information you need- but it is not a comprehensive guide book, like the Lonely Planet guide. José Kirchner

Arrow to the Heart (Wheeler Large Print Book Series (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (January, 1997)
Author: Jennifer Blake
Average review score:

Entertaining but not a keeper
After learning the death of his step-brother, Rowan decides to do his own investigation which leads him to a plantation home in Louisiana. He arrives during a time of festivities and tournaments based on a Roman Theme. The owners of the home and over the festivities are Katrine and Giles Castlereigh who have been married over 5 years. Theirs was an arranged marriage between Giles and Katrine's father- both of which were best of friends and around the same age. Katrine has settled into the life style of having an older, wealthy husband- but has not given him an heir. The main reason being because the marriage has never been consummated. Why? And Giles desparately wants an heir. He has decided to choose a lover for Katrine to give him his desire. And it will be the Champion of Tournaments. You will find romance, suspense, betrayal, murder, love... and Rowan will make your heart beat fast. There is every thing needed for a juicy story. Good read but not a keeper for me.

Classic Jennifer Blake
Katrine is married to an older man Giles who can not perform his marriage duties and get an heir upon his wife. So he arranges a tournament in which, unbeknownst to the all, the winner will be the man to produce an heir with Katrine. Enter Rowan. Handsome and skilled, destined to be the winner. But he is here for other reasons. The year before his brother was found dead. He believes that Katrine knows why. In the midst of Rowan trying to find out the mystery of his brother's death, Giles tries frantically to push Katrine and Rowan together so he can have his long awaited heir. This story is a marvelous whodunit with enough romance, suspense, and sexual tension to keep any reader hooked. I liked Rowan right off, but Katrine seemed too cool at first, until I realized that she wasn't being difficult. She was merely trying to protect a friend. Very enjoyable.

Wonderful Reading
Arrow to the Heart is a wonderfully written book. It had suspense, romance, and betrayal. Katrine makes a wonderful change from a passive wife to a woman with a mind of her own due to the fact that she is pushed into something she doesn't want to do, but finding she likes it.
